COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

On 2 December 1974, a wild winter’s night, 120 people attended a public meting in the former 'NALGO' Holiday Camp on Filey Road, at 'Knipe Point', and called for the formation of a residents’ association.  A steering committee was formed and on 28 April 1975 the Osgodby Community Association held its inaugural general meeting.  The objects of the Association are “to promote the benefit of the inhabitants of Osgodby and the Neighbourhood without distinction of sex, or of political, religious or other opinions . . . to provide facilities in the interest of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation . . ..”  (ex OCA Constitution)

On 2 February 1976 the Community Centre opened in the former shop premises at 4-6 Osgodby Lane. They were taken on a ten-year lease at a rent of £700 per annum.  The varied activities run by different volunteers for all age groups at affordable rates flourished from the start, and they were soon confident that they were on the right road with a successful venture.  A building fund was started and in nine years it rose to £10,611; the rent also rose – to £1,500 pa.  In December 1983 they were offered the opportunity to buy the premises.  The Centre finally became theirs on 1 January 1985 at a cost of £15,000, with the help of a County Council grant of £5,000
